ملخص: According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a proverb is:
"a short pithy saying in frequent and widespread use that expresses a basic truth or practical precept" . Starting from this definition, we can say that proverbs are essential part of language, and each language has its own proverbs. Proverbs reflect the culture of the people who speak that language, and they are the output of common experiences.
Proverbs are relatively easy for learners and through proverbs learners can improve their speaking skills, acquire new words, and learn how to use these words in meaningful contexts.
This dictionary is intended mainly for Arab learners of English. The methodology employed in compiling this dictionary can be summarized as follows:
• English proverbs have been arranged in alphabetical order.
• En explanation of the meaning of each proverb has been provided in English.
• This is followed by a literal or semi-literal translation of each proverb into Arabic.
• When possible, the meaning is clarified by citing some verses from The Holy Qur’an, Hadith, or Arabic poetry.
