ملخص: Genital mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas infections are commonly diagnosed by culture, However, given the time-consuming culture which requires to 2 to 5 days for Ureaplasma spp. and M. hominis and up to 8 weeks for M. genitalium, infectious agents can be detected in less than 8 hours by nucleic acid amplification techniques . The more recent developed of PCR approach enables the amplification of target DNA in the specimens, increasing the the sensitivity of the test by several orders of magnitude, demonstration in gels of the amplified target sequence, may suffice to indicate the presence of the infectious.
Determine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of multiplex PCR versus culture for detection of genital Mycoplasmas in clinical samples. In Saudi Arabia, there has been no previous studies about detection of genital mycoplasmas infections with the use of PCR assay as diagnostic tool. For this purpose, Culture method was used to compare with Multipex Polymerase Chain Reaction assay, and to sought wither the use of either method as a more reliable laboratory method for the detection of genital mycoplasmas infections in this country.
